Butterfly is a scrolling window manager for Mac. Every window sits side by side on one horizontal strip that runs past the edge of your screen — no overlapping, no shrinking grids. Just swipe along.
Try it
This is the real idea in your browser. Switch motion modes and feel the difference.
Windows curve like wings while moving, flat when they stop.
Drag, scroll sideways, or use the arrow buttons. Keyboard: click the demo, then press ← →, or Control + Option (⌃⌥) + ← → anywhere.
How it works
It joins the strip right next to the focused window.
Swipe with three fingers, use your mouse's thumb wheel (or the main wheel while holding Control + Option (⌃⌥)), or press ⌃⌥ ← →.
Every window keeps its spot on the strip. No digging through piles of overlapping windows.
Motion
Three motion styles. As smooth as your screen allows (up to 120 frames per second).
A plain, instant slide. Nothing in the way.
A frosted-glass pane blurs the strip while it moves — sharp again the moment it stops.
Windows ride a curved surface with frosted glass, like wings. No jump when it stops.
Features
See every window at once. Swipe up with four fingers and your whole strip zooms out, so nothing is ever lost off screen.
Put several windows in one column. Tabs live in a glass capsule.
Window icons at the bottom. Click to jump, drag to reorder.
Every display gets its own strip — or share one across side-by-side screens.
Even windows that refuse to resize join the strip at their own size. No per-app rules to set up.
See the focused window at a glance, optionally dim the rest.
Launch at login and forget about it.
Optionally quit an app when its last window closes.
You don't need a trackpad. Every input moves the strip just as smoothly.
Three-finger swipe left or right. Four fingers up: Overview of the whole strip.
Your mouse's thumb wheel, or the main wheel while you hold Control + Option (⌃⌥).
Control + Option + arrow keys.
